Morphology and spreading rate of oceanic back-arc spreading centers: the case of the northern Lau basin

According to the theory of plate tectonics, most of the oceanic crust origins along the Mid-Ocean Ridges (MORSs), the boundaries between two different lithospheric plates move apart. New melt rises below the axis of the MORs through a process of adiabatic decompression of the mantle, coming into contact with sea water. It cools, solidifies, acquires the magnetization of the earth’s magnetic field and begins to migrate laterally and symmetrically on both sides of the ridge, following the divergent relative movement of lithospheric plates. Seafloor spreading can origin also along convergent plate boundaries, where the regional extensional tectonics in the back-arc basins creates progressively the thinning of the crust, the formation of a basin intruded by magmatic bodies, and a system of segments of spreading. However, processes of crustal accretion in back-arc regions are more complicated within respect those of MORs, because mechanism drive the extension in the upper plate are several and linked to the different geological and geodynamic evolution of a single subduction system.

Special Issue Applied Sciences (MDPI) “New Insights Into Marine Geology” – Editor: Dott.ssa Gemma Aiello (CNR ISMAR Sezione Secondaria di Napoli)

Special Issue- call for papers – Deadline 20 September 2023

This Special Issue “New Insights Into Marine Geology”, covers a broad spectrum of topics on the subject of the marine geology, inviting authors to publish marine geological studies from both Mediterranean and extra-Mediterranean areas. In particular, I invite seismo-stratigraphic studies, collecting new research in the field of seismic and sequence stratigraphy in coastal and marine environments. I also welcome tephrostratigraphic studies performed on gravity and piston cores, aimed at individuating volcanic stratigraphic markers in marine successions. Sedimentologic and stratigraphic studies on Quaternary marine deposits of delta, shelf and slope environs fit well with the proposed issues. Marine geological mapping and IODP expedition results will also be suitable for this volume. The examination of marine hazards in coastal and marine sectors will result as a further elaboration of the methods proposed in this Special Issue. Review papers, including full reviews of specific topics in the field of marine geology, are also suitable for this Special Issue, including paleontological, biostratigraphic and palaeoecological studies.
