Summary:
The ON/OFF project, funded by the Ministry of University and Research, targets a comprehensive (ONshore/OFFshore) basin-scale analysis of the key surfaces for sequence stratigraphic interpretation, by innovatively examining the hierarchy of depositional hiatuses and condensed horizons on well-constrained millennial to centennial time scales, well beyond the conventional differentiation between sequence stratigraphic surfaces. Through the application of a multiscale sequence-stratigraphic method (from systems tract to parasequence and bedset) and integration of sedimentology, seismic stratigraphy, paleoecology and bulk-sediment geochemistry, the proposed research project aims at developing a coherent picture that integrates the sedimentary response of alluvial, coastal and shallow-marine depositional systems to short-lived eustatic and climatic events. For the study area, the Po-Adriatic system, a huge amount of data and high-resolution age control are available.
Special emphasis will be placed on higher-order key stratigraphic surfaces (paleosols, peat layers, condensed horizons etc.) that may represent discontinuity surfaces with distinctive petrophysical and geotechnical characteristics. Building up a predictive model of sequence stratigraphic distribution will provide insight into the quantification of subsurface heterogeneities, with obvious implications for aquifer characterization and engineering investigations. Geological history is mostly recorded by surfaces. ON/OFF considers all the types and scales of stratal surfaces to be as important as the strata they bound—if not more so.
