Summary:
MEDIGREEN aims to advance the European Green Deal (EGD) transition in the Mediterranean Sea through transnational cooperation in Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP). In the framework of the multi-sectoral dimension of EGD and MSP, MEDIGREEN undertakes an operational approach, focusing on key uses and activities (either traditional or emerging) relevant to the basin context: offshore renewable energies, fisheries, aquaculture, and nature protection. The project will allow EU countries to strengthen EGD-related actions in the MSP plan finalization or implementation phases and to prepare the floor for the enhancement of such actions in the next MSP cycle. Involvement of non-EU countries, parties of the Barcelona Convention, will contribute to target EGD-oriented, marine management coordinated actions at the sea-basin level. The four Work Packages of the project will investigate the impact of MSP in the EGD, develop national actions (in EU and non-EU countries) regarding sector responses towards the EGD, and identify first steps for a Mediterranean way towards the EGD. To explore the regional dimension of the EGD-MSP nexus for the four considered sectors, MEDIGREEN will engage the Mediterranean MSP Community of Practice (MED-MSP-CoP) and will exchange with similar initiatives in the Black, North and Baltic seas. CNR-ISMAR contributes to several project activities and will lead WP3 “Greening the MED through MSP: a regional ambition” focusing on the regional sea analysis and discussion of the MSP’s role in supporting the achievement of the EGD objectives.
