ESA-ROSS

Programme: European Space Agency (ESA)

Project title: ROSE-L Ocean Science Study

Acronym: ESA-ROSS

Duration: 26/01/2026 – 26/7/2027

Project budget: € 550.000

ISMAR budget: € 30.000

Web site: n.a.

Summary:
This ESA-funded activity aims to develop and validate the L-band reference models regarding the backscattered signals models to the surface winds and sea state information. In particular, it aims to fit a Geophysical Model Function (GMF) for the retrieval of ocean surface vector winds from the Radar Observing System for Europe at L-Band (ROSE-L). Moreover, it aims to provide a first assessment of the potential ROSE-L contribution to the ocean-based services currently using Sentinel-1 products. The quantitative verification of the ROSE- L performance for the retrieval of ocean wind fields is a priority in this study. Finally, it aims to support the evolution of L-band SAR modes over the ocean.
