Summary:
The CLOSER project, funded by the Ministry of University and Research, aims to understand deoxygenation which in the context of climate change can result in widespread ocean stratification and eutrophication. Past events of severe anoxia have been recorded in the Mediterranean and documented by sedimentary archives as dark, organic-rich deposits known as Sapropels. Sapropels and the effect of deep basin stagnation have received significant attention from the scientific community; however, the climate drivers that governed anoxic events in the Mediterranean remain poorly understood.
CLOSER represents a comprehensive study of the anoxic event recorded between 10,000-6,000 years ago, with the goal of documenting the connection between the Alpine-Adriatic regional climate and Mediterranean oceanographic processes. The research relies on a multidisciplinary and multi-archive approach, combining the analysis of continental deposits (pollen), speleothems, ice cores, and marine sedimentary archives within a framework of extremely high (and unprecedented) resolution.
Complementary analytical methodologies will be conducted to obtain quantitative and independent results regarding climate variability, with the aim of using the Sapropel anoxia event as an analogue for the oxygen crisis that could develop in future decades, associated with a disruption of thermohaline circulation.
