Summary:

Satellite-based particulate backscattering (bbp) data have advanced our understanding of ocean biology/ biogeochemistry over the last few decades by using bbp as a proxy for particulate organic carbon and phytoplankton biomass which are fundamental for estimates of ocean productivity, used to constrain coupled physical/biogeochemical numerical models. Several algorithms are available to retrieve bbp from space, but while they are widely used, it remains a challenge to compare satellite and in-situ observations of bbp. The paucity of in-situ data stands as a barrier to evaluating methods that retrieve bbp, and ultimately to understand how these biases may influence the application of bbp for key science question as how ocean productivity is changing in relation to the ongoing ocean warming. INSPIRE aims to provide the best operational strategy to validate satellite bbp data by using the new generation of BO-SVP drifting buoys. We will design an efficient, integrated global ocean observing system for bbp composed of remote sensing, model and in-situ. An in-situ validation of the observing system developed with deployment of drifting buoys is also included at specific target key sites.
