Director’s message:
It is my pleasure to present the second edition of the Annual Report of the Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-ISMAR). More than a summary of activities, this report reflects a period of significant development, transformation and collective effort across the Institute’s scientific, technical and administrative community. I would therefore like to sincerely thank all colleagues who contributed to the work presented in these pages.
The period 2025–2026 marked an important phase for ISMAR. Major initiatives developed within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) strengthened infrastructures, observing systems, laboratories, digital capacities and collaborative networks across the Institute. At the same time, ISMAR expanded its activities in biodiversity research, marine observation, interoperable data systems and technological innovation, further reinforcing its contribution to national and European marine science.
Among the most significant developments were the consolidation of the Marine Data Center and the definition of a renewed data policy aimed at improving the accessibility, interoperability and long-term stewardship of scientific data. Important progress was also achieved within the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC), including the development of the Biodiversity Gateway network, which connects scientific research, digital innovation and public engagement across multiple territorial nodes.
An important milestone during the reporting period was the International Symposium on Transformative Ocean Science, held in Venice in March 2026. The Symposium brought together scientists, policymakers and institutional representatives from across Europe and beyond, creating an opportunity to reflect collectively on the future role of ocean science in addressing environmental, technological and societal challenges.
This phase of development also coincided with an important institutional transition within the National Research Council involving the reorganisation of marine research activities. The process encouraged broader reflection on ISMAR’s mission, scientific identity and future strategic directions within a rapidly evolving ocean-science landscape.
Looking ahead, strengthening integrated observing systems, digital infrastructures, interdisciplinary collaboration and international partnerships will remain central priorities for the Institute, alongside continued investment in scientific innovation, training and support for early-career researchers.
I hope this report provides a clear overview of the activities, infrastructures, initiatives and collaborations that continue to shape the work of our scientific community.
