The Institute of Marine Science (ISMAR) of the National Research Council (CNR), in collaboration with the Marine Geology Section of the Geological Society of Italy, is organizing the second edition of the Deep-Sea Frontiers School, focusing on some of the processes that shape the ocean floor and their implications for resources, hazards, and habitats.
The School will explore processes and products related to:
- Seafloor Instability
- Contour Currents and Sedimentation
- Fluid Flow and Subsurface Circulation
- Volcanism and Hydrothermalism
The five-day program is designed to provide a balance between theoretical foundations and hands-on practical exercises. Under the guidance of international experts, participants will learn how to integrate diverse datasets — from seismic reflection data to geochemical proxies — to better understand the geomorphic evolution of the deep seabed and its environmental significance.
Who can apply?
The School is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students, PhD students, and early-career researchers with a background in:
- Earth and Natural Sciences, Environmental Sciences
- Marine Sciences
- Environmental Engineering
Venue and dates
The School will be held from 15 to 19 February 2027 at the CNR Research Area in Bologna, Via Piero Gobetti 101, 40129 Bologna, Italy. The language of instruction will be English.
Registration and fees
The number of participants is limited to 30, and participation will be guaranteed on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to timely registration.
The participation fee is 350 €, which includes: course materials, coffee breaks and lunches, a social dinner.
Accommodation and other living expenses are not included in the registration fee.
