The conference, organized in collaboration with the Marine Geology Section of SGI, is being held under the auspices of the National Research Council (NRC), the National Interuniversity Consortium for Marine Sciences (CoNISMa), the Instituto Idrografico della Marina (IIM), the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS), and the Italian Geological Society (SGI). Abstracts of the presentations are published in SGI’s Abstract Book series with the DOI: https://doi.org/10.3301/ABSGI.2025.01. Francesca Budillon, Fabiano Gamberi and Maria Filomena Loreto of ISMAR CNR have participated in the organization of the conference since the first edition in 2016.
On March 17 and 18, 2025, the 6th Conference of Italian Marine Geologists (CGMI), Marine Geology in Italy, the landmark biennial event that brings together a large part of the national scientific community that, with different approaches, methodologies and aims, shares an interest in marine geosciences, will be held in Rome at the headquarters of the National Research Council. The topics covered represent a good cross-section of basic and applied research taking place in Italy, and a litmus test of the country’s marine knowledge and development needs.
Indeed, the conference brings together researchers from universities, research organizations, private companies and state land management agencies in a fruitful exchange of experiences and updates on the various activities underway and technological innovations to support research. The CGMIs are held under the auspices of the National Research Council, CONiSMa, Navy Hydrographic Institute, INGV, Ispra, OGS and Italian Geological Society.
The program of the 6th CGMI is dense, with more than 70 presentations, bringing together the studies of 350 researchers, an invited talk on the results of IODP drilling in the Tyrrhenian Sea in 2024, and a panel discussion on the mapping of marine areas in CARG sheets under construction. Prof. Maria Bianca Cita, a prominent scientist in our discipline who recently passed away, will also be remembered, and the annual meeting of the Marine Geology Section of the Italian Geological Society will be hosted, as usual, with the proclamation of the new coordinator/treasurer.
The CGMIs promote the participation of young researchers thanks to the well-established mode of exposition (3 minutes with slides presentation in plenary session and 1 hour in digital/paper poster session) that encourages informal communication, and to the awarding of prizes, financed by the sponsoring companies. Awards will then be held for the best scientific production, best photograph and best video clip on marine geoscience topics, judged by an independent committee outside the conference organization.
A film and documentary on marine geology topics and a 70-image account of the history of our discipline in the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1945) will also be screened.
Thanks to the volunteer organization of a group of enthusiastic researchers, thanks to the six sponsoring companies and the National Research Council, which has always hosted our conference at its prestigious headquarters in Rome, it was possible to keep the event free of charge in this edition as well.
Hoping for a wide participation of interested colleagues, we wish everyone well!
