Venice Roundtable: Toward a Shared Vision for the Future of Marine Science

International roundtable among directors of European research institutions, experts and representatives of initiatives and programs dedicated to charting new trajectories of collaboration and innovation in marine science. Location: CNR ISMAR Venue in Venice, dates: March 20 and 21, 2025.

On March 20 and 21, 2025 at the CNR ISMAR headquarters in Venice, an international roundtable was held among directors of European research institutes, experts, and representatives of initiatives and programs dedicated to charting new trajectories of collaboration and innovation in the field of marine sciences. The event provided an opportunity for reflection and vision on the role of marine sciences in view of the upcoming FP10 European Framework Program and new European strategies.

During the meeting, crucial issues such as interdisciplinarity and trans-disciplinary cooperation in marine science, strengthening of research infrastructure, integration between marine, social and human sciences, and development of innovative models for training new generations of scientists to promote a new dimension of global collaboration in ocean research were addressed.

The goal was not only to bring together experts, but also to move a first solid step toward the creation of an inter-institutional “think tank” dedicated to defining joint strategic actions to address the major environmental, social and economic challenges related to the oceans.

During the meeting, the ‘Venice International Symposium on Marine Sciences’ was also launched. From 2026, it will represent an annual event with a strong international connotation designed as a platform for dialogue and long-term vision on marine sciences.
