“RiViVe”: rethinking biodiversity through deep connections between knowledge, places, and people

The RiViVe project – Perspectives for rethinking biodiversity in a transdisciplinary and collaborative way won the award for best poster in the “NBFC Collaborative Research” category during the National Biodiversity Forum, held last May at the University of Milan-Bicocca. Selected from over 250 entries, the poster was awarded by the spoke leaders of the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC) for its scientific quality, communicative effectiveness, and visual impact.

RiViVe, conceived as part of Spoke 7 of the NBFC and coordinated by CNR-IREA, proposes an innovative and transdisciplinary approach to biodiversity, bringing together ecologists, artists, anthropologists, social scientists, and local communities. The goal? To overcome the boundaries between disciplines and build shared knowledge, rooted in the territories and their knowledge, in order to collaboratively address the challenges associated with biodiversity loss but also, and above all, to enhance its richness.

The first edition of the Residential Laboratory “RiViVe – Rethinking the Diversity of Life” will be held from October 13 to 18, 2025, in Collelongo (L’Aquila), in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park: a setting of extraordinary ecological richness and one of the sites of the Long-Term Ecological Research Network (LTER Italia). Collelongo is a living territory, guardian of ancient beech forests and local knowledge, ideal for hosting research and training courses based on the integration of scientific, cultural, and local knowledge.

With over 80 applications already received, RiViVe is preparing to become a pilot project of the ‘Biodiversity Gateway’, which will also be part of the NFBC’s legacy after 2026, and to create a widespread network of Ambassadors ready to promote ecological awareness, activism and responsible research.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to building a future in which science and society truly come together.

In addition to CNR-IREA, which is coordinating the proposal, other institutes (CNR-IBE, CNR-IRSA, CNR-ISMAR), the LTER Italia Network, and other entities are participating in the co-creative process of RiViVe: Fondazione Pianpicollo Selvatico ETS; National Association of Science Museums; Science Museum Education Group; Council for Agricultural Research and Analysis of Agricultural Economics (CREA), Ca’ Foscari University of Venice – Centre for Environmental Humanities (NICHE Center).

The authors of the award-winning poster: Alba L’Astorina (CNR-IREA), Amelia De Lazzari and Alessandra Pugnetti (CNR-ISMAR), Diego Fontaneto (CNR-IRSA), Giorgio Matteucci and Nicola Vuolo (CNR-IBE), Alice Benessia, Andrea Caretto and Raffaella Spagna (Pianpicollo Selvatico), Nicola Margnelli (ANMS – Uni Roma Torvergata), Roberta Raffaetà (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice-NICHE Centre), Alessandro Campanaro and Alice Lenzi (CREA).
