CNR aboard the METEOR M216 expedition in the Mediterranean

The M216 expedition is underway aboard the research vessel Meteor, an important international mission of the GO-SHIP / Med-SHIP program, led by GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel, to assess the state of the Mediterranean Sea along a historical time series.

The CNR is also participating in the expedition, with seven researchers and technicians from three institutes:

CNR ISMAR, co-leader of the expedition, responsible for physical oceanography measurements and eDNA analysis in the BIO GO-SHIP field.

CNR IRBIM, providing technical support for the scientific instrumentation on board.

CNR IBF, engaged in the study of dissolved organic carbon (DOC).

🔬 Research activities include measurements of temperature, salinity, water mass circulation, nutrients, and gases, as well as biodiversity estimates, from the surface sea to the deep sea, to understand the effects of climate change and the evolution of Mediterranean ecosystems.

🧭 Observations extend from the eastern Mediterranean (Cyprus) to the Strait of Gibraltar, covering all major basins. The data collected is essential for comparing the current state of the sea with previous campaigns in the series, carried out in 2011 and 2018.

🌍 A key contribution to the knowledge and protection of one of the most vulnerable and strategic seas on the planet.
