Programme: European Space Agency Future EO-1 “Earth Observation Science for Society”
Project title: Upper Ocean Dynamics
Acronym: ESA-UpperDyn
Duration: 15/10/2024 – 14/10/2027
Project budget: € 1.000.000,00
ISMAR budget: € 143.000,00
Web site: https://upperdyn.oceandatalab.com
Summary:
The project aims to provide a kinematic assessment of North Atlantic subpolar mode water formation (SPMW) and its relation to Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) variability basing on novel data-driven reconstructions. Innovative methodologies will be developed to combine satellite observations, in-situ measurements, atmospheric forcings and diagnostic models over the North Atlantic Ocean, specifically filling the present observational gaps in the 4D fields of temperature, salinity and ocean currents.
Our objective here is to provide enhanced estimates of the SPMW formation rate and of its variability, together with improved estimates of the AMOC variability, analysing both changes in the net transport between the surface and 1000 m depth across the 26°N section, and changes in the patterns and intensity of the Gulf Stream/NAC. To this aim, we will exploit the innovative higher resolution (1/8°), daily reconstructions of the 3D upper ocean currents and density/mixed layer depth reconstructions developed as part of Upper Ocean Dynamics Project, but also include a comparison to the values obtained starting from the new 1/8° daily 3D reconstruction that will be released in the framework of European Copernicus Marine Service (ARMOR3D-HR, planned for November 2024).
