The European Commission has officially granted ERIC status (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) to DANUBIUS-RI – the International Centre for Advanced Studies on River-Sea Systems – recognising its strategic value for the sustainable study and management of river-sea systems.
With the decision of June 24, 2025, DANUBIUS-RI joins the select group of EU-recognised infrastructures, opening a new phase for interdisciplinary science at the freshwater–marine interface.
Italy is one of the founding countries of DANUBIUS-ERIC, represented by CNR-ISMAR, alongside Romania (host country), Austria, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Moldova. Over the years, CNR-ISMAR has coordinated Italy’s participation in the project, supported by OGS and CORILA, and contributed actively to the scientific and infrastructural development of the initiative.
To support this new phase, the creation of the DANUBIUS Italy Joint Research Unit (JRU) is currently underway. The JRU will act as the national coordination body for all Italian activities related to the infrastructure.
DANUBIUS-ERIC will provide integrated access to observation and modelling platforms, laboratories, data and services in key European areas, to support research on water quality, biodiversity, human impacts and climate change in river-sea systems. Learn more: DANUBIUS-RI becomes ERIC,
