About us
Welcome to the Institute of Marine Sciences (CNR-ISMAR), part of the National Research Council of Italy. Our mission is to advance fundamental and applied research in the fields of physical, chemical, and biological oceanography, as well as marine geology. We are dedicated to enhancing our understanding of ocean processes and climate variability while developing innovative systems and services for the observation, protection, and sustainable management of marine environments and coastal areas.
Our headquarters is situated in the historic city of Venice, complemented by six branch offices across Italy, located in Bologna, Lerici (SP), Naples, Palermo, Rome, and Trieste. We also operate in Milan and Florence, further expanding our reach and collaboration opportunities.
At CNR-ISMAR, our research activities are supported by a comprehensive observational system, featuring a diverse array of both fixed and mobile platforms. This includes oceanographic vessels, buoys, coastal monitoring stations, and autonomous mobile vehicles. Our extensive network of advanced laboratories allows us to study and analyze a wide variety of environmental parameters. Through these infrastructures and our expertise in modeling, we can collect real-time data and design experimental activities that explore critical oceanic phenomena and processes.
Join us as we strive to deepen our knowledge of the marine world and contribute to the sustainable future of our oceans.
