International symposium coordinated by ISMAR, Venice, 24–27 March 2026, supporting the EU Ocean Pact
The International Symposium “Transformative Ocean Science” will take place in Venice from 24 to 27 March 2026. Coordinated by the Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-ISMAR), the event will bring together experts from science, policy and society to discuss how ocean science can more effectively inform European decision-making.
From 24 to 27 March 2026, the Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-ISMAR) will coordinate the first edition of the International Symposium “Transformative Ocean Science”, held in Venice.
The Symposium is conceived as a high-level international forum bringing together ocean and marine scientists, policy-makers and key stakeholders to discuss how ocean science can more effectively support European policies and decision-making processes. The event will focus on the EU Ocean Pact, the European Union’s new strategic vision for the ocean, and on the role of transformative approaches in strengthening the interface between science, policy and society.
The programme includes three working days reserved for approximately one hundred invited participants, structured around a collaborative and interdisciplinary process. Discussions will address major challenges and priorities for ocean sciences in Europe, covering topics such as ocean observation, deep-sea exploration, biodiversity, ethics, transdisciplinarity and innovation in public policy.
The final day, on 27 March 2026, will be dedicated to a plenary session and high-level Round Tables with institutional representatives and international stakeholders. These sessions will be held at the Sala Squadratori, within the Arsenale della Marina Militare di Venezia, and will focus on the presentation and discussion of the Symposium’s main outcomes. Participation in the final day is open upon registration. The registration deadline is 27 February 2026.
