“Women in Blue: training opportunities in ocean science”. Call is open

On Sept. 27, the International Seabed Authority (ISA), which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, announced an extraordinary opportunity for female scientists from around the world to participate in the “Women in Blue: training opportunities in ocean science” initiative. The 2024 call for the project, which is open from Sept. 27 to Nov. 3, will allow 10 female scientists, from developing countries, to undergo training and acquire the skills and knowledge needed to advance their careers in marine science.

The initiative, proposed by the Cnr Institute of Marine Sciences (Cnr-Ismar) and developed as part of the “Women in Deep-Sea Research” Project, was born from the collaboration between ISA and Cnr-Ismar, and is supported by the Joint Training and Research Center established in Egypt in 2023 to increase opportunities for capacity development, marine scientific research and technology transfer to countries in the Middle East and Africa.

“Women in Blue” aims to equip project participants with the skills and knowledge needed to advance their careers in marine science. The training consists of two parts. The first consists of participation in the Advanced School of Marine Geology called “Deep Sea Frontiers,” which will take place from Jan. 27-31, 2025 at the Bologna branch of the Institute of Marine Sciences. The school aims to offer an in-depth study of the geological and geochemical processes acting on the seafloor and the main methodologies used to study them.

Afterwards, participants will have the opportunity to embark on Gaia Blu, CNR’s research vessel, for an oceanographic campaign during which they will familiarize themselves with advanced technologies, equipment and infrastructure related to seafloor research.

The initiative is co-funded by the ISA Partnership Fund and CNR and will support the participation of 10 female scientists from the world’s least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing states.
