Summary:

The F3O (Freshwater Fluxes in Ocean Forecasts) project aims at improving the quality of the Copernicus Marine Service ocean reanalyses and forecasts using artificial intelligence techniques to better represent the freshwater fluxes from a combination of in-situ measurements, satellite observations and hydrological forecasts. Currently, the Copernicus Marine Service ocean modelling systems rely on climatological estimates of the river discharge, which are by construction unable to capture the full variability of the global water cycle. Such assumptions have a detrimental impact on the quality of the ocean reanalyses, analyses and forecasts. The F3O project suggests using deep learning to combine hydrological predictions from the GloFAS model, satellite gravimetric observations from the GRACE and GRACE-FO missions and in situ measurements from river gauges. The hybrid river discharge data set generated shall meet the Copernicus Marine Service requirements in terms of accuracy, coverage, resolution and data availability. The new freshwater forcing dataset will be tested in ocean model simulations that mimic Copernicus Marine Service delayed time (reanalyses) and real-time (forecasts) products to facilitate early adoption of the hybrid freshwater forcing dataset.
