The National Research Council is participating with the traveling interactive exhibition “AQUAE.The future is in the ocean,” in the first edition of MED FEST, an international and innovative event dedicated to the protection of the Mediterranean Sea, its biodiversity, culture and tourism, which will be held in Cagliari, Italy, Sept. 26-29, 2024. The event aims to promote the sustainable management of the Mediterranean’s biodiversity, which plays a crucial role in the functioning of all the ecosystems of the countries that surround it and is the basis of life, with a direct impact on the well-being of the community and the individual.
“AQUAE. The Future is in the Ocean,” now in its sixth year, is the result of a broad collaboration between the CNR Communication Unit, the Department of Earth System Sciences and Environmental Technologies (CNR-Dssta), the Institute of Marine Sciences (CNR-Ismar), the Institute for the Study of Anthropogenic Impacts and Sustainability in the Marine Environment (CNR-Ias), the Institute of Polar Sciences (CNR-Isp), and the Institute of Marine Engineering (CNR-Inm).
The goal is to take the public on a discovery of the oceans and the functions they perform for our survival. In addition to a description of the main characteristics of the marine environment-geographical, physical, chemical and biological aspects-it also sheds light on an environment that was virtually unknown until the middle of the last century: that of the seabed. Through interactive exhibits, scientific equipment, scale models, video installations and evocative images, questions such as: how are waves and currents formed? What is the link between the sea and the Earth’s climate? What is the biological engine of the sea?
Part of the exhibition is dedicated to the relationship between man and the sea: the oceans have always been an invaluable resource for our species, and today science and technology are engaged in researching new methods for sustainable use of the many resources the sea offers us, as well as developing strategies to preserve the marine environment from the effects of human impact.
Exhibits in the exhibition were built in the scientific carpentry and electromechanical laboratories of the Communication Unit at the Genoa headquarters.
