Physical and Biogeochemical Oceanography
At the Institute of Marine Sciences (CNR-ISMAR), our research in physical oceanography and biogeochemistry is founded on decades of expertise and the most comprehensive observational systems in Italy. We focus on the study of oceanographic and climatological processes across a range of scales—from the coastal environments to the expansive global ocean—encompassing both offshore regions and micro-scale fluid dynamics.
Our multidisciplinary approach combines observational data and numerical modeling to develop diagnostic tools that assess and understand the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems. We aim to measure the potential effects on marine resources while minimizing the influence of anthropogenic pressures. Our research activities integrate in situ measurements with remote sensing (satellite) observations, laboratory experiments, and advanced numerical modeling simulations.
Through both diagnostic and prognostic simulations, we strive to capture the dynamics of global and local ocean processes and explore their interconnections with biological and biogeochemical components. ISMAR takes pride in its active participation and leadership in numerous national and international research projects, advancing our understanding of the marine environment and its responses to ongoing changes.
