Summary:
Seas and oceans are the largest resource of the planet and are of fundamental importance for developing sustainably a strategic asset for a country with 8700 km of coasts and possessing ca 15% of the surface of the Mediterranean Sea. However, their potential is still largely unexploited. In order to expand the Blue economy of the Country we need a tight cooperation between research and industry capable of identifying smart solutions. In fact, from one side, we need to develop tools for the sustainable use of marine resources and, from the other side, we can create new occupational opportunities. The marine life offers a plethora of novel opportunities, either in terms of seafood, nutraceutical, and bioactive molecules, which are of extraordinary importance in the field of pharmacology, biomaterials and bioremediation. The development of new technologies and biotechnologies can unlock this underexploited potential with positive impacts in several industrial sectors and with positive impact on national economy. The project EMBRC-UP represents a national strategic implementation of the ERIC EMBRC (European Marine Biological Resource Centre) and is planned to enhance the research potential in the area “Health and Food” in the Sectors of marine resources. The infrastructures proposed follow the model of a distributed infrastructure and are unique in the Italian framework. The equipment, sensors, instrumentation, digitalization and data acquired through this project will allow to boost the Italian research in the exploration and sustainable exploitation of the marine resources, while at the same time, will reinforce the cooperation and exchanges within the Italian JRU, thus increasing the Italian competitiveness in these sectors of strategic importance also in the light of the European Partnership Sustainable Blue Economy that Italy is going to coordinate.
