Abstract:
The CARG Project involves the production and digitalization of 636 geological and geothematic
maps at a 1:50,000 scale, which together form the complete national geological coverage at
this scale.
After the first phase of activities ended in 2004, a second phase, started with the approval of
Budget Law 160/2019, allowed to produce new sheets in addition to those already completed
in previous years, increasing territorial coverage from 44% to 50%.
A flagship element of the CARG Project is the Database, which allows users to consult and
process information on the components of the geological and geothematic maps, with greater
detail to support the use of cartographic data in multiple applications. Specifically, the
Database contains essential knowledge tools, such as geological data, which are
indispensable for proper land-use planning and management and, more specifically, for the
prevention, reduction, and mitigation of hydrogeological risk. The data populating this
database are visible in the ISPRA webgis: https://sgi2.isprambiente.it/viewersgi2/
