In Naples, the sea is more than just a landscape: it is culture, research, and identity. It is an element experienced every day and studied for centuries, which today finds a new home in the Biodiversity Gateway’s Territorial Node.
The city is now enriched by a new center dedicated to research, outreach, and the promotion of bio-geodiversity. The Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council (CNR-ISMAR) and the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station, in collaboration with the City of Naples, announce the opening of the Naples Territorial Node of the Biodiversity Gateway of the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC), reinforcing a scientific tradition deeply rooted in the sea.
The exhibition comes to life within the Casina Pompeiana, in the Villa Comunale, and represents one of the nodes of a broader national infrastructure—both physical and digital—dedicated to the study and protection of biodiversity. Here, in one of the symbolic sites of the relationship between Naples and its sea, scientific knowledge meets storytelling and experience.
Thanks to a major renovation project, the Casina Pompeiana has been transformed into an innovative space that combines research and public outreach, while maintaining its historic role as a cultural venue open to the city. The Biodiversity Gateway was created as a meeting point between the scientific community and citizens, with the goal of sharing knowledge and strengthening environmental awareness.
The Naples Territorial Node offers an immersive and interdisciplinary journey that guides the public in discovering the biodiversity and geodiversity of the Gulf of Naples, one of the richest and most complex environments in the Mediterranean. Through images, sounds, digital visualizations, and scientific content, visitors can explore the deep connections between natural environments, living organisms, and human communities.
The opening of the Naples hub represents a further step toward shared awareness: an invitation to learn about, experience, and protect our natural heritage, starting with the very sea that has always defined Naples. A forward-looking project that intertwines research, innovation, and participation.
The Biodiversity Gateway is coordinated by CNR-ISMAR as part of the NBFC, funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan with NextGeneration EU funds.
