Materials and environment

Nowadays, there is the deep need to reach an hard balance between the protection of structures operating in the marine environment from its aggressiveness and the contemporary protection of the marine environment from anthropic pressures coming from human technologies and protection systems.

Anticorrosion and antifouling protection of structure materials immersed in seawater entails negative consequences (pollution) for the marine environment.

These issues are handled by ISMAR through the following research topics:

Corrosion and protection

Corrosion and protection

Analysis of traditional and innovative metallic materials behaviour in the marine environment, development and characterization of different kind of pre-treatments and coatings.

Person in charge: Pierluigi Traverso

Biofouling and antifouling

Biofouling and antifouling

Development of new systems, with a low environmental impact, to protect materials from corrosion and marine organisms settlement.

Person in charge: Marco Faimali

Cultural Heritage

Cultural Heritage

Deterioration monitoning and protection of metal handworks.

Person in charge: Paola Letardi

Techniques to analyze environmental impacts

Techniques to analyze environmental impacts

Development of monitoring and analysis systems able to point out the effects of anthropic activities on the marine environment.

Person in charge: Marco Faimali

Aims

Aims

  • Study of interactions between traditional and/or innovative structural metals/alloys and marine environment (seawater and marine atmosphere)
  • Development of new systems, with an environmental impact lower than that of the traditional ones, for the protection from corrosion and biofouling
  • Development of monitoring systems able to identify environmental impact effect on marine ecosystems
  • Application of electrochemical techniques to historical-artistic metal artefacts characterization and monitoring
  • Identification of specific indicators and mathematical models for climatic analyses and verification of hypotheses about climatic change effects on planktonic ecosystem
  • Transfer of activities results, with particular attention to methodologies, instruments and services, to private Companies and public Agencies at national, regional and/or local level
