Biological and ecological studies in marine environment, aimed to fisheries management and sustainability and biodiversity conservation in marine protected areas, both in Mediterranean and Southern Ocean. Main topics include: 1) fish longevity and growth rate estimates through otolith macro- and microstructure analysis; 2) microchemistry analysis in otoliths (trace elements) aimed to study the extent of isolation/connectivity among fish populations; 3) reproductive traits of fish through macroscopic and histological analyses of gonads; 4) trophic regimes and feeding competition through stomach contents analysis.

  • Principal investigator of two research projects funded by the National Programme of Antarctic Research (PNRA)
  • Co-PI of several research projects funded by European Community, by the Ministry of Education, University and Research and Ministry for Agriculture, Food and Forest Policies
  • Referee of scientific papers on most important peer-reviewed journal in his field of interest, such as Antarct Sci, Aquat Ecol, Aquat Liv Res, Deep Sea Res II, J Fish Biol, J Mar Biol Assoc UK, Mar Biol, Mar Freshwat Res, Polar Biol, Sci Mar, as well as international research projects.
  • Participant to several scientific national (R/V Italica) and international (Germany, R/V Polastern) (USA, R/V Yuzhmorgeologiya) cruises in Antarctica
  • Designed member of the Executive Board of the Polar Network of CNR (Polarnet)
  • Advisor of 4 MSc thesis and 2 PhD thesis at the Marche Polytechnic University

Currently, he published more than 100 scientific papers, whose about 50 on peer reviewed journals (JCR), as well as 3 chapters of books with an international publisher (Springer).
